  • Notes
    • 1 Source from family, not verified.First arrived in Ashtabula Ohio in 1884 at the age of 14. His older brothers Michael, Ben and Louis sent steerage fare for his passage to America. He applied and obtained citizenship at age 20 in Ashtabula. The four brothers worked on the docks for several years, saved their money and returned to Italy. There they purchased/built the family farm home in Castlepetrosa, a suburb now of Isernia Italy. Nicola was a laborer, and musician. He left Italy a second time in 1900 and settled in an Italian ghetto in Newark, NJ. He opened a saloon with a friend and entertained customers with Italian songs. He met Pasquale Gilbert Abruzzese, a prompter in an opera house in Newark. He was invited to the Abruzzese home where he met Uncle Gilbert's sister Fidalma. When Gilbert moved to Pen Argyl, PA to get out of the pollution of NJ, Nicola followed him to be near Fidalma. They married and moved back to New Jersey. Two years after the marriage, George was born. Eventually, they moved back to Pen Argyl where Uncle Gilbert obtained a job for Nicola running the steam engine at a slate quarry. After a while, Nicola decided to return with Fidelma and George to Ashtabula. He was encouraged to move to Ashtabula by his brothers who had already settled there working to unload iron ore boats. Michele returned Italy.

      2. Source from Marie Williams, proven from various documents.
He was born 4 May 1879 in Isernia, to Antonio Martella and Palma Armenti and given the name Giacomo. (1) He first came to New York on 10 May 1897 aboard the La Bourgogne at age 20 and single headed to New York and was listed under the name Giacomo Martelli. (2) In 1904 when he married Fidalma Abruzzese, his name was listed as Nicolin Martello. (3) When he returned from Italy with his second wife, on February 16 1914 aboard the S.S. Celtic, he was listed as Giacomo Martella, his wife was Addolorata Di Donato, listing his last permanent residence Campobasso, Isernia and his mother Palma Armenti of Isernia as the nearest relative in the country whence he came. (4) On September 10, 1918 when he registered for the draft he signed as Nicola Martella and gave his date of birth as May 1, 1879. All of these records lead me to believe he was born Giacomo and became Nicola later in life. Umberto's objection to the birth record did not rule out that the parents listed on that birth record were Antonio Martella and Palma Armenti regardless of where the birth took place. I checked Isernia birth records thru 1881. They could not have had another child that same year named Nicola and had children in these years without room for a child named Nicola. By 1879, Palma was 45:
      4 Apr 1858 in Castelpetroso
      8 Jan 1860 in Castelpetroso
      23 Mar 1884 in Castelpetroso
      9 May 1865 in Castelpetroso
      7 August 1868 in Castelpetroso
      2 Jan 1870 in Castelpetroso
      30 Apr 1873 in Isernia
      13 August 1875 in Isernia
      20 May 1877 in Isernia
      4 May 1879 in Isernia
